It was unsettling on the first look. The high rise looks like giant drapery and not something livable. It is also too abstract and distant from the reality of the context. But on a second thought, it is equally strange that we allow homogenous unit stacked up in each a massive degree and people think it is more than OK. How adaptable human beings are...

"who our buildings would be?" A funny image across my mind is the "personalized" house in Tati's film 'Mon Oncle'. The film shows a modern high-tech house with two round windows owned by Hulot(the main character)'s sister: interrupted by the noise made by Hulot one night, his sister and brother-in-law's heads appear in the illuminated windows, just like black eyeballs tracking around. Ironiacally, the house's alienation of humanity is manifested as an anthropomorphic face. It also indicates the moment when the character/gaze of the house overlaps the character/gaze of its user. Somehow architecture and its user shapes each other.

I wonder how long it will be before people carry around a single customizable object. (or microchip implant) Now where did I put my internet-camera-phone-key-calculator-musicsystem-dayplanner-creditcard-identification device?

The problem I see with this trend is that while it simplifies life when it's functioning properly, the potentials for having your entire life 'hacked' increases greatly. Better have a backup battery handy too.

The jump from simile to metaphor is interesting. In product advertisement there are some cartoon charecter mascots like the 'scrubbing bubbles' but I can't think of a product presenting itself as a particular human before. Can you imagine the casting calls?

I wonder who our buildings would be? Perhaps a better questions is who would we like our buildings to be...
